Piano Safari – Piano Repertoire Book 2
Piano Safari Repertoire Book 2 is the core lesson book for Level 2 of the Piano Safari piano method, for students ages 6 to 11 who have finished Repertoire Book 1 (SKU PSRep2).
In Level 1, students played far more by ear than they could read. Book 2 is where the two meet. Piano Safari’s Teacher Guide describes the goal plainly: by the end of Level 2, a student’s rote and reading levels merge. Reading stretches from 2nds and 3rds up to 4ths and 5ths, starting from any note instead of only landmark notes. Students also play their first early classical pieces, which feels like a real step up.
Who is this book for?
Publisher level: Level 2, listed by Piano Safari as Elementary.
Approximate student level: Elementary.
It’s for students who have finished Piano Safari Repertoire Book 1. They should already read unisons, 2nds, and 3rds from the landmark notes, count with “Ta” syllables, and know the Level 1 animal techniques. Piano Safari says most students spend about a year in Level 2, at roughly six to eight weeks per unit.
What’s inside Piano Safari Repertoire Book 2?
Six units, each mixing several kinds of music:
- Reading pieces — learned from the page, not the recording, in textures that grow from one-hand melodies to hands together, blocked 5ths, and two-part writing
- Rote pieces — taught by imitation, still using the full keyboard and a wide range of sounds
- Challenge pieces — early classical pieces by Reinagle, Beyer, Czerny, Köhler, and Gurlitt, with finger numbers provided
- Duets — pieces for two students, where each learns both parts
- Improvisation pieces — mood and nature “sound pieces”
- Theory pages
How the reading builds:
| Unit | Reading focus |
|---|---|
| Unit 1 | 2nds and 3rds from landmark notes (Treble G, Middle C, Bass C); metric counting begins |
| Unit 2 | 2nds and 3rds from any note on the staff |
| Unit 3 | 5ths; sharps and flats |
| Unit 4 | 2nds, 3rds, and 5ths together; new rhythm work |
| Unit 5 | 4ths |
| Unit 6 | All intervals from 2nds through 5ths |
Other new skills: counting with numbers (alongside the “Ta” syllables), the dotted quarter–eighth rhythm, upbeats, ties, fermatas, staccato and slurs, new tempo and expression terms, and the first use of the damper pedal.
By the end of the book, a student reads intervals from 2nds through 5ths starting on any note, can see patterns in a score, and has learned a handful of early classical pieces.
How is Repertoire Book 2 used?
It’s a teacher-led method book. The audio tracks cover the rote and challenge pieces. Reading pieces are left off on purpose so students learn them by reading. The audio access code is on the title page. Free Reminder Videos on Piano Safari’s website help with home practice.
Students usually finish a unit’s pieces, cards, and theory pages before moving on.
What else does Level 2 need?
Level 2 adds a separate technique book. In Level 1 the technique exercises were inside the Repertoire Book. In Level 2 they move to Technique Book 2 (SKU PSTech2), which pairs with this book unit by unit. Piano Safari’s Level 2 Pack is Repertoire Book 2, Technique Book 2, and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards 2.
Level 2 companions at August Muse:
- Technique Book 2 (SKU PSTech2) — pentascales, triads, and special motion exercises
- Theory Book 2 (SKU PSTheory2) — written practice and composition for each unit
Before Book 2 comes Repertoire Book 1 (SKU PSRep1). After it comes Repertoire Book 3 (SKU PSRep3).

Frequently asked questions
Is my child ready for Repertoire Book 2?
If they’ve finished Repertoire Book 1 and read 2nds and 3rds on the staff, yes. Your teacher will make the call.
Do we need Technique Book 2 too?
Piano Safari designed them to go together, and both are in its Level 2 Pack. The technique work moved out of the Repertoire Book at this level.
What classical pieces are in Book 2?
Early classical pieces by Alexander Reinagle, Ferdinand Beyer, Carl Czerny, Louis Köhler, and Cornelius Gurlitt, taught as Challenge Pieces.
Can a student coming from another method start here?
Possibly. Book 2 assumes Piano Safari’s interval-reading approach and animal techniques. A teacher can tell whether to start here or in Book 1.
