Piano Safari: The Advancing Pianist – Piano Technique Book 1
Advancing Pianist Technique 1 is a 72-page technique book from Piano Safari for early intermediate pianists (SKU PSAPT1). It picks up where the technique work in Piano Safari Level 3 and Older Student Level 3 leaves off.
Level 3 introduced scales, chord inversions, and primary chords in six keys. This book makes those patterns bigger. Scales and arpeggios cover more of the keyboard, inversions are played blocked and broken, progressions are played blocked and arpeggiated, and each key gets the full set of patterns: scale, inversions, primary chords, progression, and arpeggio. Then each unit adds one or two new skills that intermediate music asks for, like trills, double thirds, or octave scales.
Who is Advancing Pianist Technique 1 for?
Publisher level: Advancing Pianist Level 1, listed by Piano Safari as Early Intermediate.
Approximate student level: Early Intermediate.
It’s for teens and adults (Piano Safari lists ages 12 and up) who have finished Piano Safari Level 3 or Older Student Level 3, or who play at an early intermediate level from another method. Students should already know the scales and primary chords in C, G, and F major and A, E, and D minor.
What’s inside?

In each new key, students learn the scale (minor keys include their scale forms), chord inversions, primary chords, a chord progression, and the arpeggio.
How does it work with Sight Reading Book 1?
The companion Advancing Pianist Sight Reading Book 1 (SKU PSAPSR1) follows the same key order, so the scale a student practices this week is the key they read in. Piano Safari sells the two as its Advancing Pianist Level 1 Pack.
We sell the Advancing Pianist books individually, not as a pack, so you can buy the book your teacher assigns or replace a single book.
Where does it fit?
It follows Technique Book 3 (SKU PSTech3) in the children’s series or Older Student Repertoire & Technique Book 3 (SKU PSOSRep3). Next is Advancing Pianist Technique Book 2 (SKU PSAPT2), which moves into keys up to four sharps and flats. Students usually play repertoire from separate books alongside it.
