Piano Safari Theory Book 1

Theory Book 1 is the pencil-and-paper part of Piano Safari Level 1. Each unit lines up with Repertoire Book 1, so students copy, write, match, and label the same ideas they’re playing at the piano. It works well for lesson time or homework.

Piano Safari – Piano Theory Book 1

Piano Safari Theory Book 1 is a 64-page written workbook that goes with Level 1 of the Piano Safari piano method (SKU PSTheory1). It’s for children ages 6 to 11 who are working in Repertoire Book 1.

Its job is simple. At the piano, kids learn by hearing and playing. In this book, they slow down and work with a pencil, copying notes, sorting rhythms, labeling keys, and matching what they hear to what they see. Writing something down is a different way of knowing it, and for some children it’s what makes the page of music finally click.

Who is this book for?

Publisher level: Level 1, listed by Piano Safari as Early Elementary.
Approximate student level: Early Elementary.

It’s for students already in Piano Safari Repertoire Book 1. The units follow that book, so a child works in the matching unit here while learning it at the piano. Kids who like worksheets, puzzles, or a bit of homework structure may enjoy it. Students in group classes can use it there, too.

What’s inside Piano Safari Theory Book 1?

The book follows the same layout as Repertoire Book 1: an Introductory Unit, then Units 1 through 5, with a review at the end of each unit.

Concepts covered:

  • High and low on the keyboard; finger numbers
  • Groups of black keys and the white-key letter names
  • Note values and Piano Safari’s Animal Rhythm Patterns; rests
  • Dynamics and beginning Italian terms
  • The staff, clefs, and landmark notes
  • Reading by interval: unisons (“same”), 2nds, and 3rds
  • Melodic direction (up, down, same) and stem direction

Kinds of activities: copying, analyzing, writing, listening, and matching.

How is the theory book different from the theory pages in Repertoire Book 1?

Repertoire Book 1 has some theory worksheet pages already. Theory Book 1 adds a lot more written practice for each unit, plus unit reviews. Piano Safari’s own Level 1 Pack is just the Repertoire Book and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards, so this workbook is the extra layer. It’s most useful for kids who need more repetition with notation, or for teachers who like to send home written work.

Where does Theory Book 1 fit in the series?

It’s designed to go with Repertoire Book 1 (SKU PSRep1) and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards 1 (SKU PSSR1), unit for unit. The book teaches the idea, the cards practice reading it, and this workbook has the student write it. Theory Book 2 (SKU PSTheory2) continues the series at Level 2. All are at August Muse.

Frequently asked questions

Is Theory Book 1 required for Piano Safari Level 1?
No. Piano Safari’s Level 1 Pack is the Repertoire Book and Sight Reading Cards. The theory book is extra written practice. Follow your teacher’s list.

Can my child do it alone at home?
Many pages can be done as homework. Your child should be working on the same unit in Repertoire Book 1, so the ideas are already familiar.

Can it be used with another piano method?
It’s built to match Piano Safari’s units and its interval-based reading, so it fits best with Repertoire Book 1.

Best For

  • Piano Safari Level 1 students ages 6 to 11
  • Kids who learn well by writing things down
  • Students who need more practice reading notes and rhythms
  • Teachers who assign written homework
  • Group piano classes
A Note from August MuseCheck your teacher’s list first. If it says “Level 1 Pack,” that’s the Repertoire Book and the cards, and the theory book may or may not be on it. If it is, grab it with the other Level 1 books so everything lines up unit for unit.

A small tip: keep a pencil with an eraser in the book bag. There’s a lot of writing.

Stop by and page through it next to Repertoire Book 1 to see how they match.
