Piano Safari – Piano Technique Book 3
Piano Safari Technique Book 3 is the 96-page technique book for Level 3 of the Piano Safari method (SKU PSTech3). It moves students from five-finger patterns into full scales and real chord work in six keys.
Think of it as the toolkit for playing in a key. Each unit takes one key and works through the same set of skills: the scale, the chord in every position, the three main chords of the key, and a chord progression. Then students learn a common accompaniment pattern to play those chords. Once those pieces are in a student’s hands, music in that key gets easier to learn, because the patterns are already familiar.
Who is this book for?
Publisher level: Level 3, listed by Piano Safari as Late Elementary.
Approximate student level: Late Elementary to Early Intermediate.
It’s for Piano Safari students working in Repertoire Book 3, who have finished Technique Book 2 and know their major and minor pentascales and triads. Piano Safari also says Technique Book 3 can be used as a technique supplement with any method, which makes it useful for students ready for organized scale and chord work.
What’s inside Piano Safari Technique Book 3?
An Introductory Unit reviews major pentascales and adds metronome work. Then each unit focuses on one key:
| Unit | Key | Also introduced |
|---|---|---|
| Unit 1 | C major | Scale degrees; Alberti bass |
| Unit 2 | A minor | Transposing Alberti bass; waltz bass |
| Unit 3 | G major | Stride bass |
| Unit 4 | E minor | One-octave arpeggios; chromatic scales |
| Unit 5 | F major | Broken chords; Hanon Exercise No. 1 |
| Unit 6 | D minor | Accompaniment patterns; Hanon variations; double thirds |
| Unit 7 | Review of all six keys | More Hanon variations and double thirds; “Technique Extravaganza” |
In every key, students practice the scale (minor keys include their minor scale forms), chord inversions, the primary chords, and a chord progression. “Stepping Stones” review pages in Units 3 through 5 bring back earlier material so it doesn’t fade.
How does Technique Book 3 work with the other Level 3 books?
The keys line up across Level 3. When a student is in Unit 3, Repertoire Book 3, Technique Book 3, and Theory Book 3 all work in G major. The scale and chords learned here show up right away in that unit’s pieces, and the Theory Book has students write and analyze the same chords. Piano Safari’s guide suggests practicing with a metronome at slow, medium, and fast tempos, and practicing hands separately before hands together.
Where does Technique Book 3 fit in the series?
It follows Technique Book 2 (SKU PSTech2) and pairs with Repertoire Book 3 (SKU PSRep3) and Theory Book 3 (SKU PSTheory3), all at August Muse. Piano Safari’s Level 3 Pack is Repertoire Book 3, Technique Book 3, and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards 3.
