Freed Studio Professional

The Freed Studio Professional takes the higher-profile Studio box and adds the customizations advanced dancers ask for: a 3/4 shank, cut-down back satin panels, a low heel, and an elastic drawstring. The result is a sleeker, more articulated shoe with a tight, streamlined fit — the consistency of a stock Freed with a more professional line.

  • 3/4 shank in standard or hard for a more articulated demi-pointe and roll-through
  • Higher-profile, slightly tapered box finishing at a sturdy medium platform
  • Deep V-shaped vamp for a clean line on the foot
  • Cut-down back panels, low heel, and elastic drawstring for a snug, sleek fit
  • Internal shock-absorbing platform; handmade in England without choosing a maker

Pointe shoes should be fitted in person. Come in to August Muse in downtown Elizabethton, TN, and we will fit you properly before you buy.

Freed of London Studio Professional Pointe Shoe

The Freed Studio Professional pointe shoes — Studio Pro for short — take the reliable Studio box and finish it with the details advanced dancers tend to want. It keeps the higher-profile, slightly tapered box and the sturdy medium platform of the Studio line, then adds a 3/4 shank, cut-down back satin panels, a low heel, and an elastic drawstring. Together those changes give a sleeker silhouette and a closer, more streamlined fit, while still offering the pair-to-pair consistency of a stock Freed.

The defining feature here is the 3/4 shank. By leaving the last quarter of the sole soft, it lets a strong, well-trained foot articulate more fully through demi-pointe and shape a more pronounced line — something a full shank does not do in the same way.

What does a 3/4 shank actually change?

A full shank supports the whole length of the foot; a 3/4 shank stops short of the heel, leaving the back of the sole flexible. For a dancer with the strength to control it, that softer heel allows a deeper, more articulated roll-up and a cleaner curve under the arch when fully en pointe. It is a feature for dancers who have the ankle and foot strength to use it — which is exactly why the Studio Professional is aimed at the experienced dancer rather than someone newer to pointe.

How is the Studio Professional different from the Studio and Studio II?

All three share the Studio’s handmade English construction. The original Studio has a full shank and the tallest box. The Studio II keeps a full shank but drops to a lower, broader box for stability. The Studio Professional sits closest to the original Studio in profile — higher box, medium platform — but swaps in the 3/4 shank, trims the back panels and heel, and uses an elastic drawstring for a sleeker, tighter finish. If you like how the Studio box fits but want more articulation and a more refined line, this is the one.

Who is the Studio Professional best for?

This is a shoe for the advanced student or professional-track dancer with the strength to handle a 3/4 shank and the foot to use the deep V vamp. The cut-down heel and elastic drawstring keep the back of the shoe close so it does not gap on a strong, articulate foot. A newer dancer is usually better served by the full shank of the Studio or Studio II while their strength catches up — and that is a conversation we are happy to have with you in person.

What does “handmade without choosing a maker” mean?

Traditional Freed shoes carry a maker’s mark on the sole that identifies the craftsman, so dancers can reorder the exact feel they prefer. The Studio Professional is made to a standardized procedure instead, so the fit and platform hold steady from pair to pair without you having to track a maker. The letter stamped on the sole marks the batch, not a maker, which keeps reordering simple once you know your size, width, and shank.

Sizing & Fitting

We do not publish a pointe shoe size chart for the Studio Professional, by design. Pointe sizing does not follow street shoe size, and the right size, width, and shank come down to your foot shape, strength, and level — and with a 3/4 shank, strength matters more, not less. A wrong fit is uncomfortable at best and a real injury risk at worst. The Studio Professional comes in a range of sizes and widths so it can be matched to your foot, and that match only happens in person.

If you have already been professionally fitted in the Freed Studio Professional and know your exact size, width, and shank, you are welcome to reorder your pair from us. If this is your first time in this shoe — or your feet, strength, or level have changed — please come in and let us fit you first.

Best For

  • Advanced students and professional-track dancers with strong, articulate feet
  • Dancers who like the higher Studio box but want a 3/4 shank and a sleeker line
  • Strong feet that need a cut-down heel to keep the back of the shoe close
  • Dancers wanting a more refined, streamlined finish on a consistent stock Freed
  • Anyone ready to move on from a full shank into a more articulated shoe

A Note from August MuseThis is the advanced dancer’s shoe in the Studio family. The 3/4 shank and cut-down heel reward a strong, well-trained foot with a cleaner line and more articulation, but they ask for the strength to back it up. If you are still building that strength, we will steer you toward the full-shank Studio or Studio II first — not to upsell you down, but because the right shoe for where you are now will serve you better than the flashier one. We carry all three so we can put them on your foot and let you feel the difference.

Pointe is never a guess in our shop. Come see us in downtown Elizabethton for a proper fitting. If you already dance in the Studio Professional and just need your size, call or stop in and we will get your pair.
