Merlet Lisa

Most pointe shoes ask a dancer to commit to one shank strength for the life of the shoe. The Merlet Lisa doesn’t. Its shank slides out of the sole and swaps in seconds, so the same pair can wear a softer shank for barre and technique work, then a harder one for rehearsal or stage. When a shank finally breaks down, you replace the shank — not the shoe.

Handmade in France with a reinforced box and wings built to outlast several shanks, a wide, stable platform, and a soft cotton lining, the Lisa is a working shoe designed around how a dancer’s needs change from class to class.

  • Interchangeable natural-fiber shanks — Medium and Hard included with the pair
  • Additional shanks available in Soft, Medium, Hard, and Extra Hard
  • Reinforced paste box and wings made to withstand multiple shank lives
  • Wide platform with vegan microfiber tip and Poron® foam insert for quieter landings
  • Low vamp and high vamp options, both carried at August Muse

Merlet Lisa Pointe Shoe — Interchangeable Shank System

The Merlet Lisa pointe shoe is built around one idea that changes how a dancer thinks about her shoes: the shank isn’t glued in. It slides into the sole and pulls back out, which means the strength of the shoe can change with the work in front of you. A softer shank for a long technique class. A harder one when rehearsal calls for more support. The shoe stays the same — the support adapts.

Merlet has been making pointe shoes in France for generations, and the Lisa is still made the traditional way — by hand, using the stitch-and-turn technique that tucks every material into the shoe for a smooth feel against the foot. The engineering is new; the craftsmanship isn’t.

How do the interchangeable shanks work?

Each Lisa shank is a shaped piece of natural fiber that seats into a channel in the sole. To change it, you pull the worn or unwanted shank out and slide the new one in — no tools, no glue, no break-in period for the shoe itself. Every pair ships with two shank strengths, Medium and Hard, so a dancer can feel the difference in her own shoes from day one. Replacement shanks come in four strengths — Soft, Medium, Hard, and Extra Hard — and are sold separately.

This matters most on the days a dancer’s needs don’t match her shoes. Dancers who take class in the afternoon and rehearse in the evening usually solve that with two pairs at different stages of wear. The Lisa solves it with one pair and a spare shank in the dance bag.

What happens when the shank wears out?

In a conventional pointe shoe, the shank breaking down is usually what ends the shoe’s life — even when the box is still solid. With the Lisa, a dead shank isn’t a dead shoe. The box and wings are reinforced specifically to hold their shape through several shank lives, so as long as the box is still supporting the foot properly, you replace the shank and keep dancing.

One honest caveat: this only pays off if the box outlasts the shank, and every dancer breaks down shoes differently. A dancer who’s hard on her box won’t get the same mileage from the system as one whose shanks always die first. That’s part of what we look at in a fitting.

Low vamp or high vamp — which one?

August Muse carries the Lisa in both vamp heights: low vamp (about 6.5 cm / 2.6″) and high vamp (about 6.6 cm / 2.6″). As a general rule, longer toes and higher arches tend to want the higher vamp for containment, while shorter toes often do better with the lower cut. The difference between the two is small on paper and noticeable on the foot — this is a decision to make in the fitting chair, not from a chart.

Construction details that matter on the foot

The Lisa’s platform is wide, which gives a steadier base en pointe, and it’s covered in a vegan microfiber tip with a Poron® foam insert — a small layer of shock absorption that also keeps landings quieter. The throat is U-shaped with an elastic drawstring for fine-tuning the fit around the foot, and the ivory cotton lining absorbs moisture through long wear. Box and wings are reinforced paste, with the box slightly tapered and the crown and wings both moderate — a middle-of-the-road profile that suits a wide range of feet.

How does the Lisa compare to Suffolk pointe shoes at August Muse?

We fit both, and they answer different questions. Suffolk shoes are handmade in England in a wide range of widths and styles — a traditional single-shank shoe with an exceptional fit range, and often the right call when the priority is dialing in an exact width. The Lisa is the choice when adaptability and shank longevity matter more: one shoe that changes strength with the day’s work and doesn’t retire just because the shank did. Neither is better across the board. Come in, try both, and let your feet decide.

Sizing — Schedule a Fitting at August Muse

We don’t publish a size chart for pointe shoes, and that’s on purpose. Merlet runs on its own scale, pointe sizes rarely match street sizes, and the right Lisa depends on foot length, width, toe shape, and arch strength working together. A wrong fit isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s a safety issue. The Lisa comes in multiple widths and two vamp heights, and those decisions belong in the fitting chair.

All pointe shoes at August Muse are fitted in person. Call or stop by our downtown Elizabethton store to schedule a pointe fitting — plan for about 30 minutes, and bring your current shoes if you have them.

Best For

  • Dancers whose week mixes technique class, rehearsal, and performance demands
  • Dancers whose shanks consistently break down before the box does
  • Anyone who wants to fine-tune shank strength without buying a new pair
  • Intermediate through advanced dancers en pointe several days a week
  • Dancers looking for a quieter, shock-absorbing platform
A Note from August MuseWhat we like about the Lisa is that it adapts instead of asking the dancer to. Swap to a softer shank for a technique-heavy week, go harder for performance season, and when a shank gives out, replace the shank instead of starting the whole break-in process over with a new shoe. The honest trade-off: the system only earns its keep if the box holds up longer than the shank, and that depends on your feet and your hours en pointe — it’s not automatic. That’s exactly the conversation to have in a fitting. Come see us in downtown Elizabethton and we’ll put the Lisa on your foot next to our Suffolk shoes so you can feel the difference before you commit.
