Suffolk U203A – Empire Tank Leotard with Low Pinch Back | Adult
An empire tank leotard places its shaping detail higher than most camisole styles — right at the empire seam, just under the bust — and the Suffolk U203A builds a full leotard around that idea. The pinch front gathers at the empire line, a low pinch back mirrors the detail through an open back, and tank straps replace the fine camisole strap used on most of Suffolk’s other pinch-front styles. It’s the same design family as our other Suffolk pinch-front leotards, reworked with a different seam placement, a different strap, and — most noticeably — eight colors instead of one.
What does “empire” mean on this leotard, and how is it different from a princess seam?
An empire seam sits high, right under the bust, rather than running the full vertical length of the torso the way a princess seam does. On the U203A, the pinch front gathers right at that empire line, which puts the visual detail up near the neckline instead of spread down the body. It’s a different effect than the V-waist or full princess-seam styles we also carry — those elongate through the whole torso, while this one draws the eye to a single point higher up.
Why tank straps instead of camisole straps?
Tank straps are wider and sit more securely on the shoulder than the fine, spaghetti-style straps on Suffolk’s camisole leotards. Some dancers and teachers prefer the added stability, especially for a longer class or a more active discipline where a strap slipping is an annoying distraction. It’s a straightforward trade-off: camisole straps read a little more delicate and classical, tank straps feel a little more secure and sporty. Neither is more “correct” — it comes down to preference and sometimes studio dress code.
Why does this style come in eight colors when most of our Suffolk leotards are Black only?
Suffolk sells the U203A as a color-forward style — Basil, Black, Iris, Lavender, Pomegranate, Sage, Sangria, and Sapphire — while most of the pinch-front camisole and half-sleeve styles we carry are Black-only. That makes this one a good fit for a studio that likes each dancer or level to wear a different color, for a dancer who wants to stand out a little in open class, or simply for someone who’s tired of an all-black wardrobe. It’s worth deciding which of the eight colors actually make sense to stock, since carrying all of them ties up more inventory than a single-color style.
How does the U203A compare to the other Suffolk pinch-front leotards we carry?
All of them share the same 92% nylon / 8% spandex fabric and the same general pinch-front-plus-low-back idea, so the fit and stretch feel consistent across the family. The 2821A uses camisole straps and a plain pinch front with no empire seam. The 2884A adds a half sleeve for more coverage. The 2824A Masterclass swaps in a ribbed, higher-spandex fabric for a snugger fit. The U203A stands apart on two fronts: the empire seam placement and the wide color range. If a dancer already owns one of the other styles and likes it, this is a reasonable way to add color variety without changing the fabric or fit they’re used to.

Care Instructions
| Step | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Washing | Hand wash cold |
| Drying | Lay flat to dry |
| Do not | Suffolk doesn’t list further restrictions beyond hand wash cold and lay flat — as with other spandex-blend leotards, skip the dryer and bleach to protect stretch and color, which matters even more here given how many colorways are involved |
