Piano Safari – Piano Technique Book 2
Piano Safari Technique Book 2 is the technique book for Level 2 of the Piano Safari method, for students ages 6 to 11 (SKU PSTech2). It covers five-finger patterns (pentascales), triads, and a set of “special exercises” that train specific motions.
The Teacher Guide puts it simply: how these patterns are played matters as much as what’s played. Every exercise has one main goal, such as a loose arm drop, a clean staccato, or a smooth thumb crossing. It’s a book about building good habits in the body, so harder music later feels natural instead of tense.
Who is this book for?
Publisher level: Level 2, listed by Piano Safari as Elementary.
Approximate student level: Elementary.
It’s for Piano Safari students working in Repertoire Book 2. In Level 1, the technique exercises were inside Repertoire Book 1. At Level 2 they get their own book. Piano Safari also says Technique Book 2 can be used as a technique supplement with any method.
What’s inside Piano Safari Technique Book 2?
Six units, matched to the six units of Repertoire Book 2. Each unit mixes three kinds of exercises:
- Pentascales — major and minor five-finger patterns, played in different rhythms and hand combinations
- Triads — major and minor three-note chords, broken and blocked
- Special exercises — specific motions, common patterns, and getting around the keyboard with confidence
Skills the exercises build:
- Legato (smooth) and staccato (short) touch, and both at once in different hands
- Relaxed arm weight on 5ths and chords
- Circular arm motion and forearm rotation
- Two- and three-note slurs
- Quick switches between major and minor
- Leaps, octave shifts, and cross-hand arpeggios
- Thumb crossings that prepare for scales (the “Scale Snake” series)
- Half steps, whole steps, and a first chord-progression pattern that leads into Level 3
The book ends with a pentascale review. Some Level 1 animal techniques return here in harder forms, such as hands together or in new keys.
How is Technique Book 2 practiced?
The exercises are mostly taught by imitation. The teacher demonstrates, and the student copies the notes, rhythm, motion, and sound. That way a student can focus on the motion without also working out the reading. Students still look at the page to spot the patterns.
Piano Safari’s guide suggests practicing hands separately, then hands together, slowly at first, and moving each exercise into the listed keys once it’s secure. Most exercises take about one to two weeks to master. Each one has an “Assigned” box and a “Mastered” box for the teacher to mark. Free demonstration videos for every exercise are on Piano Safari’s website, so parents can check how each one should look at home.
Where does Technique Book 2 fit in the series?
It pairs with Repertoire Book 2 (SKU PSRep2), unit for unit. Piano Safari’s Level 2 Pack is Repertoire Book 2, Technique Book 2, and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards 2. Theory Book 2 (SKU PSTheory2) adds written practice. Technique Book 3 (SKU PSTech3) comes next.
