Piano Safari – Piano Theory Book 2

Piano Safari Theory Book 2 is a 64-page theory workbook for Level 2 of the Piano Safari method, for students ages 6 to 11 (SKU PSTheory2). It matches the six units of Repertoire Book 2.

What stands out at this level is the writing. Every unit includes a copywork page, where students copy music by hand, and a composition page, where they make up and write down a short piece of their own. Copying trains the eye to notice how music is put together. Composing turns what they’ve learned into something they own.

Who is this book for?

Publisher level: Level 2, listed by Piano Safari as Elementary.
Approximate student level: Elementary.

It’s for students working in Piano Safari Repertoire Book 2, usually after finishing Theory Book 1. Students should already know the landmark notes and read 2nds and 3rds. Kids who enjoy drawing, writing, or making things up may especially like the composition pages.

What’s inside Piano Safari Theory Book 2?

Unit Topics
Unit 1 Landmark notes; 2nds and 3rds; rhythm; Italian terms; copywork; composition
Unit 2 Notes on the staff; rhythm; 2nds and 3rds; copywork; composition
Unit 3 3rds and 5ths; sharps, flats, and naturals; notes on the staff; rhythm; copywork; composition
Unit 4 New rhythm: dotted quarter and eighth note; 2nds, 3rds, and 5ths; notes on the staff; copywork; composition
Unit 5 2nds and 4ths; notes on the staff; rhythm; copywork; composition
Unit 6 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths; notes on the staff; rhythm; copywork; composition

It also supports the switch to counting with numbers (metric counting) that starts in Level 2. By the end, a student can name notes across the staff, identify intervals from 2nds through 5ths, read and write the dotted quarter–eighth rhythm, and has written a short composition in every unit.

Is Theory Book 2 part of the Level 2 Pack?

No. Piano Safari’s Level 2 Pack is Repertoire Book 2, Technique Book 2, and the Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards 2. Theory Book 2 is extra written practice. Piano Safari designed it to line up with all three, so it fits right in when a teacher wants more pencil work or a composition habit. If it’s not on your teacher’s list, ask whether they’d like your child to use it.

Where does Theory Book 2 fit in the series?

It follows Theory Book 1 (SKU PSTheory1) and comes before Theory Book 3 (SKU PSTheory3). At Level 2 it pairs with Repertoire Book 2 (SKU PSRep2) and Technique Book 2 (SKU PSTech2), all at August Muse.
