Piano Safari: The Advancing Pianist – Piano Sight Reading Book 1
Advancing Pianist Sight Reading 1 is a 72-page sight reading book from Piano Safari for early intermediate pianists (SKU PSAPSR1). It’s the step after the method books: for students who have finished Piano Safari Level 3, Piano Safari for the Older Student Level 3, or another method at about that level.
The angle here is rhythm, which gets much more involved at the intermediate level. This book gives nearly every unit its own rhythm topic, such as sixteenth subdivisions, dotted eighth–sixteenths, dotted rhythms in 6/8 and in cut time, alongside reading in each new key. Each of four units also includes a duet by a classical composer, which is a nice way to practice keeping a steady beat with another player.
Who is Advancing Pianist Sight Reading 1 for?
Publisher level: Advancing Pianist Level 1, listed by Piano Safari as Early Intermediate.
Approximate student level: Early Intermediate.
It’s for teens and adults (Piano Safari lists ages 12 and up) who have finished Piano Safari Level 3 or Older Student Level 3. Unit 1 reviews C, G, and F major and A, E, and D minor, along with triplets and 6/8 time, so students from another method who are comfortable with those can usually start here too.

How does it work with Technique Book 1?
The companion Advancing Pianist Technique Book 1 (SKU PSAPT1) moves through the same keys in the same order: a review of the Level 3 keys, then D major, B minor, B-flat major, and G minor. Scales and chords learned there show up in the reading here. Piano Safari sells the two as its Advancing Pianist Level 1 Pack.
We sell the Advancing Pianist books individually, not as a pack, so you can buy the book your teacher assigns or replace a single book.
Where does it fit?
It comes after Piano Safari Repertoire Book 3 (SKU PSRep3) or Older Student Repertoire & Technique Book 3 (SKU PSOSRep3). Next is Advancing Pianist Sight Reading Book 2 (SKU PSAPSR2), which moves into keys up to four sharps and flats. The Advancing Pianist books are reading and technique books, not repertoire books, so students usually play pieces from other collections alongside them.
